We heard from Tracy Warner (who heard from Karen Francisco) about an article in the Springfield (IL) State Journal-Register about the impending battle over folding Springfield's 183rd Fighter Wing into Fort Wayne's 122nd, as recommended by the recent report on military base closures released earlier this month. Writer Mike Ramsey asks readers to imagine what would happen if the mayors of the respective cities ran into each other.
"I'd say, 'Tim [Davlin, Springfield's mayor], my heart goes out to you,'" [Graham] Richard replied last week. "'We've had companies that have closed, have gone into bankruptcy, been restructured. We've lost jobs that have been moved to other communities. I'm sorry that it had to happen to your community.'"Still, Richard vowed to fight to ensure that the Davlin and others don't convince the military to close the Fort Wayne base instead.
Davlin is "being an advocate for his city, as he should be," Richard said, "and he's going to work with the legislators who might have some impact on the decision. And we're going to do the same thing here."
