Deciphering MediaWatch

The latest issue of MediaWatch is not much more than a paean to all of their, favorite media people. It's titled, "The 'pleasures' of media."

Most MediaWatch faxes include a word or two not often used in everyday language, but this one is overflowing with them -- so much so that we had to pull out the dictionary just to get through it. Because we love you all so much, we decided to make a cheat sheet, so you too could decipher just what is being communicated in this week's MediaWatch.
While the aloof, restrained visages and presentations of 21Alive's news anchors Keith Edwards, Melissa Long, and Curtis Smith are doleful, viewers are lifted by the reports of Kelly Gabriel and Eric Olson, who brighten media with their positive attitudes and reportage.
visage: a person's face, with reference to the form or proportions of the features

doleful: expressing sorrow; mournful

Although WISE33 is moribund, seeing Linda Jackson always perks us up, and many viewers still.
moribund: (of a thing) in terminal decline; lacking vitality or vigor
The NEWS-SENTINEL's Kevin Leininger is provocative (usually), and Leo Morris, without italics and convoluted as is his wont, holds our interest nonetheless.
wont: one's customary behavior in a particular situation
And JG's Frank Gray is subdued but quiescently pleasant to scan, while business writer Sherry Slater is always enlightening and spunky.
quiescent: in a state or period of inactivity or dormancy

The Frank Gray compliment doesn't make a whole lot of sense. (Can something be inactively pleasant to scan?) But hey, four out of five ain't bad.

And then there are our favorite paragraphs. First, perhaps the most condescending compliment we've ever read in a MediaWatch fax:
The JOURNAL GAZETTE's Steve Penhollow is always (well, almost always) an actual joy to read. His hokey attempts at witty written banter are precious.
And then the ham-handed "outing" of their sources:
But conversations with media folk are the best, and most joyous for us: Jerry Giesler at WISE33/WPTA, Chris Fedele and Delores Long at WPTA, Kristine Foate and Michelle Rochkus at Summit City Radio Group, Roger Diehm at Hot 107.9, a few (unnamed for various reasons) guys at WBTU-FM, Lee Tobin at Oldies, Linda Lipp at FW Business Weekly, Vince Robinson at Diversity Media, Mike Patterson at Frost, Lisa Goodman and Mary Jacobus at Fort Wayne Newpapers, Linda Austin at The NEWS-SENTINEL, a few (also unnamed) JG staffers, and some TV newsies, mentioned above but unnamed here so as not to get them in dutch with bosses.
We almost forgot -- our final definition:

in dutch: [informal dated] in trouble

Who needs etymologists (or William Safire) when you get to read a MediaWatch each week?!

[Note to MediaWatch: What, no Old English? Come on, give us a challenge!]
