Popcorn Gouging?

Steve Penhollow has a nice piece on the opening of the new Carmike Theaters on Dupont Road. He even got a Carmike official to admit an industry trade secret.
Carmike will offer special popcorn flavors every month including grape, chocolate, orange and cheddar.

The special popcorn is one way of making the best of an awkward situation, [Carmike director of marketing Dale] Hurst says.

Concession prices are necessarily high everywhere you go these days, he says, because that’s where theaters make their money.

But patrons tend to get sticker shock anyway.

At Carmike, they’ll know their money is buying them quality they can see, Hurst says.

Can Fort Wayne support three state-of-the-art movie theaters? I don't know...but I do know that competition will be good for the consumer, even if we do have to pay $6 for popcorn.
