Laying a Legend to Rest
Ben Smith reports on Chris Schenkel's funeral yesterday in Huntington:
Those in attendance ran the gamut from Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Tony George to a delegation of Miami Indians in native dress, and they heard Schenkel described as a relentlessly optimistic man, unfailingly caring friend and fierce partisan of his home state. The Purdue Glee Club provided the background music, from “Amazing Grace” to “What a Wonderful World,” the old Armstrong standard. The Scripture came from Isaiah and Corinthians and the Beatitudes; James Whitcomb Riley’s “I Cannot Say” graced the inside front of the funeral bulletin.
I cannot say, and I will not say
That he is dead. He is just away…
